HVAC is an important investment in your home. Not only does it help to increase…
Are You Aware Of R-22 HVAC Refrigerant Phase Out?
R-22 refrigerant was identified 25 years ago as containing chemicals (chlorine) which were responsible for depleting the ozone layer. As a consequence, all new refrigeration-type units manufactured from 2010 onwards could not use R-22 refrigerants. Where servicing of existing HVAC units that use R-22 refrigerants are concerned, up until 2020, only recycled or reclaimed R-22 refrigerant can be used for HVAC unit servicing.
If your HVAC unit was manufactured before 2010, then chances are it uses R-22 refrigerant. If you care about the environment, then to avoid any unnecessary leakage of this fluid, regular HVAC maintenance is a must. This may sound like an expensive option, but as we have already explained, regular maintenance can prove to be more cost effective in the long run.
Don’t be too quick to go greener though and never be tempted to change R-22 refrigerant with a more environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant yourself – that is a task for professional HVAC engineers and technicians such as we have here at Petrocelli Services. The reason why is because replacement of the refrigerant also requires replacement of the system coil as the new refrigerant requires a higher pressure to work efficiently.
If you are keen to go green, then replacing your whole unit can be an option, but we are acutely aware that HVAC units are a longer-term investment and require a substantial financial outlay. However, there is some good news, as under certain circumstances rebates and tax credits are available to help with the cost.
To find out more about changing the refrigerant in your existing HVAC unit, or to discuss the financing of a replacement unit if your current one was manufactured before 2010, then please do give us a call here at (512) 836-1414 in Austin, TX. We don’t charge for initial visits and inspections, and we will be more than happy to make sure you can go greener in the future.
