9 Problems Your AC Could Present You With This Summer
The run-up to summer is always a busy time, and the last thing you want on your hands is a faulty air conditioner. Don’t sweat it though, but excuse the pun. Our list of 9 common air conditioning problems should help you identify exactly what’s wrong with your AC.
A tripped breaker: Short circuits or current overloads can cause breakers to trip. Resetting the tripped AC breaker usually solves the problem.
An “off” wall switch: Some indoor units have dedicated wall switches, which are easily confused with regular light switches. Make sure your unit’s wall switch is turned on.
Thermostat troubles: Your thermostat might need to be switched from “heating” to “cooling” mode. Or, voltage fluctuations might have caused it to fail.
Dirty filters: Dirty filters restrict air flow, thus reducing your AC’s cooling capacity. When ignored, they can lead to poor air quality and even frozen indoor coils. Clean or replace the AC filters.
Leaking refrigerant: Refrigerant leakage decreases air conditioning efficiency and increases electricity consumption. Over time, it could freeze the coils and damage the compressor. Identifying and fixing the leak in time can save you a great deal of effort and resources.
Leaking ducts: Your ducting system should be absolutely airtight. Leaks in the supply ducts will cause wastage of air conditioned air. Leaks in the return ducts will introduce unconditioned air into the supply system.
Clogged drainage pipes: ACs extract moisture from the indoor air while cooling it, draining it out via pipes. These drainage pipes can get clogged by algae, and need cleaning from time to time.
Dirty coils: Dirty evaporator and condenser coils hamper your AC’s performance and increase its operating costs. They should ideally be cleaned every year.
Failed/blocked contactors: Eroded silver coatings cause contractors to stick, and outdoor units to keep running. Often, rogue insects can get squished between the contractors, preventing them from closing, and your AC from starting. Regularly clean and inspect the contractors for signs of failure.
