10 Handy Tips To Energy-Efficient Air Conditioning
While here at Petrocelli Services we are always keen to point out the importance of regular maintenance and cleaning of your HVAC system to maximize it efficiency and therefore minimize running costs. However, there is a load more you can do around the home to help you get the most from your HVAC system and minimize your fuel bills. Here are our top 10 tips:
- Draught proof your home by using foam strips and caulk to seal any leaks and gaps around doors and windows.
- Make sure you are fully insulated, not just in the attic, but also your walls
- Get your air conditioning ducts cleaned regularly. A buildup of dust and debris can severely affect airflow and reduce your air conditioning system’s efficiency.
- Make sure your ducts are regularly checked for leaks – there is a great deal of moist air carried through your ducts, so they can degrade and nuts can rust – not much point in keeping your attic space cool while you sweat it out below!
- Try not to have your thermostat set too low in summer. Yes, you want it to be cooler indoors compared to outside, but by how much. In addition, did you know that using ceiling fans can allow you to raise your thermostat’s temperature by 4 degrees and you won’t notice the difference.
- If you haven’t already got one, install a programmable thermostat – they’re great, especially for when you are not at home.
- Place your thermostat in a temperature-neutral location – do not put it near any source of heat, such as a lamp or other electrical appliance.
- Your house won’t cool down any faster if you lower the temperature on the thermostat, so only set it to the desired temperature.
- Use your windows – at night if it’s safe leave your windows open to let in the cool air, then during the day keep them closed, and use your shutters or curtains to keep the sunlight out and trap the cooler air inside.
- Opt for a state-of-the-art and most efficient HVAC system, especially if your current one is over ten years old.
